Biden Re-election Campaign: What comes next?

By: Haasini Sanisetty

President Joe Biden has recently announced that he will be running in the 2024 election for his second term. He is currently one of the oldest presidents in office and will be 86 by the end of his second term, which has raised concerns over his age. During the video released announcing his run, he says that he wants to finish the job and continue to make some important changes for America. The video shows accomplishments from his time as president and his fight for democracy. The main theme of the video is freedom for our country and what he has done to support that initiative so far. Despite being older, he seems to support more liberal causes such as preserving access to abortion and solving climate change. Some of the things Biden has accomplished that he highlights are the passing of the bipartisan infrastructure act, passing of other bills having to do with manufacturing and climate change curbing, and creating an alliance to provide help to Ukraine with war efforts. However his campaign seems to put a lot of emphasis on preventing Republican rule again and pointing out the wrongs in their party.

President Biden said in the video that MAGA extremists are trying to cut rights like abortion access, reading certain books, and Social Security. The Republicans responded to this by posting a video pointing out mistakes in Biden’s candidacy and once again saying that the 2020 election was rigged in the Democratic party’s favor. Despite both of the candidates flaws, they will run against each other again in the election. It’s predicted that the race will be tight, with both of the party member’s having relatively low ratings. Many are concerned about Biden’s age and about whether he’s in the right physical and mental state to lead a country. His physician has declared him fit for duty and able to take on any responsibilities that fall in his role. It’s expected that he will be nominated by the Democratic party as a candidate because he has the most chance of being elected although there are some mixed opinions. Despite having the majority, only 47 percent of Democrats want him to run again. As of now, he is depending on the support of young voters, female voters, and independents to secure him a victory.

The 2024 election might just be a rematch of 2020 with even higher and more volatile stakes. With both presidential candidates being flawed, it begs the question of why we should be basing our voting on just trying to pick the better of two evils.
