Artificial Intelligence is Harmful in School

AI has become one of the most common tools used in everyday life. This is also true in schools. Teachers use AI to explain or create worksheets that kids do not understand and in that case AI is helpful and can be a teaching buddy for kids. Though nowadays AI has turned into a cheating platform for kids. Kids use it to cheat on homeworks and even tests. All it takes is one button to take a picture and send it to your favorite chat bot for all the answers. This leads to an overreliance on AI, this reduces learning, weakens critical thinking and encourages academic dishonesty.

One of the problems with AI in schools is that kids do not ask the AI to show them how to solve a math problem, they ask for the answer. This is the same for every subject. Instead of using AI as a study buddy to help learn difficult topics, it works as more of an answer key. This leads to the kids never really learning and understanding the subjects in school anymore. The only thing that kids are learning is how to use AI without getting caught. One of the reasons this is a problem is that it would leave the student unprepared for future exams and real world problems. One of the biggest things in school that needs critical thinking is writing essays. Students need it for most of their classes, APs, college forms, and resumes. These essays can decide the students’ futures but with AI writing their essays the kids really are not learning anything. Writing essays for classes like AP Literature or AP Language takes lots of practice to get good grades and requires people to think creatively but when AI is used, their brains do not get used since all they have to do is copy and paste. Schools are not a place to learn how copy and paste works but instead how to think critically and get out of real world situations.

Another problem with AI is academic dishonesty. When some of the kids use AI to get a good score, it is very unfair to the kids that actually study for the good score since it does not mean as much anymore. If AI gets used in bigger exams like the APs or SATs, the score can determine a students’ future, so if the kid was cheating and got a better score than the one actually studying, it can change their futures for the worse. This can change peoples’ lives.

While AI can be helpful as a learning tool, there are many ways that AI creates a bad learning environment in school which can lead to a bad future. AI should not be used to do their work but help students understand how the work is done
